Application Procedures
Surface Preparation
Use Jahn M100 or M125 to repair the clay body of terra cotta tiles. The repair mortar must cure for 14 - 28 days before the application of TerraCoat Glaze Repair. Prior to application of TerraCoat always prime with SpanCoat. See SpanCoat datasheet for details. The surface must be clean, dry and free of oil, grease and other contaminants.
Mixing
TerraCoat (Satin and High Gloss) is a two-component paint. Always use the entire contents of Part A and Part B components. Stir contents of Part A, making sure no pigment remains on the bottom. Slowly add the contents of Part B to Part A while under agitation. Continue agitation until thoroughly mixed.
Thinning
Use clean water for air spray, airless spray, brush or roller, thin up to 5% or 1/4 pint (190 mL) per gallon. Note: Thin only after Part B has been thoroughly mixed with Part A.
Application
Air Sprayer: Low temperatures or longer hoses require higher pot pressure.
Gun - Binks Model 95
Fluid Tip - 66
Air Cap - 63 PB
Air Hose ID - 5/16" -3/8" (7.9-9.5 mm)
Mat'l Hose ID - 3/8" or 1/2" (9.5 or 12.7 mm)
Atomizing Pressure - 50-70 psi (3.4-4.8 bar)
Pot Pressure - 10-20 psi (0.7-1.4 bar)
Airless Sprayer: Use appropriate tip/atomizing pressure for equipment, applicator technique and weather conditions.
Tip Orifice - 0.015" -0.019"
(380-485 microns)
Atomizing Pressure - 2400-3300 psi
(165-228 bar)
Mat'l Hose ID - 1/4" or 3/8" (6.4 or 9.5 mm)
Manifold Filter - 60 mesh (250 microns)
Roller: Use short synthetic nap rollers for smooth surfaces or long synthetic nap rollers for rough surfaces.
Brush: Use a good quality nylon or synthetic bristle brush.
Touch-Up: To minimize variations in appearance, touch-up over existing TerraCoat should be done by the same method as initial application.
Curing Time:
At 75° F (24° C): To touch 30 to 45 minutes. To handle: 2 to 3 hours. To recoat: 1 to 2 hours. Curing time varies with surface temperature, air movement, humidity and film thickness.
Clean up:
Clean all equipment immediately after use with clean water followed by a final washing.
Limitations:
* The ideal temperature conditions for applying TerraCoat and SpanCoat is between 6° - 90° F. If the ambient and substrate temperatures do not fall in this range, call a Cathedral Stone Technical Representative for special instruction.
*Do not apply over mortar joints.
Pot Life:
48 hours at 50° F (10° C)
24 hours at 77° F (25° C)
16 hours at 100°F (38° C)
Packaging:
Five-Gallon Kit: Consists of approximately 4.5 gallons of Part A in a five-gallon pail and a partially filled, half-gallon jug of Part B. When mixed, yields five gallons (18.95 L).
One Gallon Kit: Consists of a partially filled one gallon can labeled Part A and a partially filled pint can labeled Part B. When mixed, yields one gallon (3.79 L).
Coverage:
Satin: 141 sq ft/gal @ 5 mil thickness (706 mil sq ft/gal)
High Gloss: 134 sq ft/gal @ 5 mil thickness (674 mil sq ft/gal)
Application of coating below minimum or above maximum recommended dry film thickness may adversely affect coating performance.
Storage And Shelf Life:
Store material in a dry area away from direct sunlight. Ambient storage conditions should be in the range of 35° F (2° C) to 100° F (38° C). Average shelf life is twelve months in original, unopened packaging at recommended storage temperature. Do not allow containers to freeze.
Technical Data
Volume Solids:
TerraCoat Satin: 44.0 + 2.0% (mixed) TerraCoat High Gloss: 42.0 + 2.0% (mixed)
Recommended DFT (dry film thickness): 4.0 to 6.0 mils (100 to 150 microns) per coat. Note: number of coats and thickness requirements will vary with substrate, application method and exposure. Spray application typically yields 6 mils per coat. Brush and roll applications yield 2-3 mils per coat, therefore two coats are required for brush and roll applications.
